š„ Daniel James McFadyens Hali-faves + this week's best events

Hey Halifax!
Weāre into peak summer festival season, but if you arenāt heading to Cavendish this weekend, plenty is happening in Halifax. This week weāve got markets, family-friendly festivals, Halifavourites from Daniel James McFadyen, and an amazing Song of the Week from Newfoundland country singer Justin Fancy.
Oh, and Halifax Jazz Festival starts next week with none other than Big Boi (yes, from Outkast) and a ton of other incredible artists playing all week on the Halifax Waterfront.
Letās dive in. š
QUICK HITS
šĀ North By Night MarketĀ is easily the North Endās coolest market. Featuring local makers, live music, and delicious food in a lively pop-up party atmosphere on The Local's back patio on Friday night from 7-10pm.
šØĀ The Gottingen Street FestivalĀ on July 12th partners with Halifax Mural Festival and Unity Fest to showcase newly unveiled street murals alongside live music performances, local makers, and great vibes.
šŖĀ The Atlantic Kite FestivalĀ fills the skies above Garrison Grounds at Halifax Citadel this weekend (July 12-13) with over 70 colorful kites, free family activities, food vendors, and hands-on kite flying lessons from 10am to 7pm.
šThe Not Since Moses race on July 13th offers a truly unique running experience where participants race across the exposed ocean floor of the Bay of Fundy at low tide, before the waters rush back in to depths of up to 50 feet.
šļø Looking to get out of the city next weekend? Escape to Kempt Shore's oceanfront campground July 17-20 for the Acoustic Maritime Music Festival, featuring four days of intimate performances by Canadian singer-songwriters like J.P. Cormier and Terra Spencer, beach access, jam sessions, and camping under the stars.

Halifax indie-folk artist Daniel James McFadyen drops his new single "Back To The Country" this Friday, marking another milestone in his steady rise from Valley pubs to selling out Toronto's Great Hall and Halifax's Marquee Ballroom Daniel James McFadyen drops new single and announces national tour - Sound Check Entertainment. Fresh off his triple win at the 2024 Music Nova Scotia Awards Hot Sun by Daniel James McFadyen on TIDAL and still riding the wave of his ECMA-nominated hit "Hot Sun" 2022 Nominees - East Coast Music Association, McFadyen continues to give back to the community that shaped him as founder of Wolfville's Ridge Fest, which showcases the top up-and-coming musical talent from the Anapolis Valley area.
We asked Daniel for his favourite spots and artists in Halifax (and Wolfville) for this weekās Halifavourites feature.
Coffee: Narrow EspressoĀ
Personally, I think itās the best espresso you can get in the city. Anywhere using North Mountain beans (shoutout Berwick) tends to knock it out of the park. I also love that you can barely move in there, and that your seat might be about half a foot from the bathroom, cozy in the truest sense. In Wolfville, my go-to is Charts (also North Mountain beans).
Bars: Jellieās
My buddy Mat Hughes introduced me to my new favourite bar: Jellies. He had his album release after-party thereāI went to bed early, but Iām sure good times were had by all. Great people, good music, and a cool vibe.
Food: The Brown Hound (Agricola)
The Hound Burger with a Guinness is my go-to. Itās one of those meals thatās always better than you remember it being. Solid cozy pub with solid vibes (if you can find a seat).
Food/Bar: Kingās Arms Commons (Wolfville)
Their BBQ chicken nachos on wontons are elite. Plus, theyāre super supportive of local music and have some of the nicest staff around. Also my Tuesday night trivia spot, highly recommend (shout out Graham).
Local Music:Ā Callum Gaudet
Callumās one of my favourites, haunting Americana vibes done right. I had him and his band play Ridgefest, a little festival I run in the Valley, and he absolutely killed it.
Local Music:Ā Lizard Hips
One of my new favourite bands in the Valley. Theyāre a psych-rock group thatās brand new but super tight. They just released their first single and have a full record on the way this year. Definitely worth checking out.
Local Music:Ā The Public Service
āHome in Meā might be one of my all-time favourite songs. Such good people. Their music has that homegrown, feel-good thing thatās hard to beat. Big love for them.
Beer:Ā Exile on North Street (Unfiltered Brewing)
Top-tier beer. Strong, tasty, no nonsense. I used to live across the street from Unfiltered in Halifax⦠dangerous.
āļø Song of the Week
Newfoundlandās Justin Fancy is making some of the best country music in Canada right now. You can catch him at Cavendish Beach Music Festival this weekend on the main stage opening for Lainey Wilson, and his latest single āBreak My Heart Againā is now in rotation on just about every country music radio station across the country.
We asked him about the CBMF gig earlier this week and he shared this heart-warming story:
āI reached out to them back in December last year, just checking in and letting them know Iād love to come back. My daughter is a HUGE Lainey Wilson fan and we had planned on coming to the concert anyway. I mentioned that and a couple weeks later I got a response back that went something like this - āHow would you like to be the worldās best Dad and open for Lainey on Saturday, July 12 on the main stage?āā¦. I honestly dropped to my knees. I was in disbelief and my daughter almost passed out. Sheās 12 by the way. So, yeah, weāre going to Cavendish and cannot wait!ā
