The Thunderbirds have made it through to the NLL finals, Grammy-nominated NS songwriter Laura Roy’s debut album is out, and Food For The Ears is building an amazing festival we all need to support.

Plus, an incredible new single from Lindsay Misiner produced by a 3x Grammy winning composer, and two Nova Scotian films that are playing in theatres across the country - which I’m pretty certain is something that has never happened before.

Laura Roy’s Late Bloomer Season

A hometown matinee from a Grammy-nominated NS powerhouse.

Laura Roy — Late Bloomer Season album release show, Sanctuary Arts Centre

Laura Roy is a Grammy-nominated songwriter who has played sold-out stages at Wembley Stadium, backed up Sabrina Carpenter and Dua Lipa, and toured with some of the top artists in the world. Her debut album — Late Bloomer Season — is out now, and it’s incredible.

The album release show is Saturday May 31 at The Sanctuary Arts Centre, 3 PM — a matinee with a string-forward ensemble (Sam Wilson, Ali Enriquez, Rachel Bruch, Blanche Israel). $30.

Now In Theatres · Two Nova Scotia Films

Two NS-made films are in theatres across Canada right now — and both are playing in Halifax this week.

At The Place of Ghosts

Directed by Bretten Hannam

A supernatural thriller from Two-Spirit L’nu filmmaker Bretten Hannam (Bear River, NS). Two estranged Mi’kmaw siblings — played by Blake Alec Miranda and Forrest Goodluck — reunite after a malevolent spirit visits, and must journey into the Place of Ghosts to confront their past.

Little Lorraine

Directed by Andy Hines

A crime drama born from Adam Baldwin’s 2022 song Lighthouse in Little Lorraine. Hines co-wrote the screenplay with Baldwin, expanding the song’s portrait of 1980s Cape Breton coal miners turned drug smugglers. Shot on location in Sydney and Louisbourg.

We’re going to be talking about this one for the next four weeks, so let’s start. Food For The Ears is two nights of Halifax music outdoors at Alderney Landing — a non-profit festival raising for Feed Nova Scotia.

🎸 Friday June 12 — The Public Service + Colrain headline.

🎤 Saturday June 13 — Rankin MacInnis, The Broken Reeds, and Elyse Aeryn headline. Morgan Toney (fresh off his Juno win), Mat Hughes, and Good Dear Good also on the bill.

Lindsay has been one of the steadiest voices in Halifax pop & soul for years, and she calls FEELINGS the biggest song of her career — co-written with 3× Grammy-winning composer Shannon Sanders, who also produced the track. She’s nominated for Breakthrough Artist of the Year and R&B / Soul Release of the Year at this month’s ECMA Awards, and she’s performing at NovaFest at Alderney Landing this Saturday.
