Romeo + Juliet

Sweet Sequined Sixteenth! Birthday Double Bill! Screening times: Thursday, July 30, 9:00 PM Baz Luhrmann | USA | 1996 | 120 min Carbon Arc Cinema turns 16 years old this July! Birthday celebrations include a Baz Luhrmann double bill (Romeo + Juliet will be preceded by Strictly Ballroom). Free popcorn to anyone wearing sequins or sparkles! IMPORTANT: This was an outdoor screening, however the strong likelihood of wet weather means we will head into the indoor auditorium as usual. Two households, both alike in dignity… In Verona Beach, the Capulets and Montagues are two rival business empires. The animosity of the older generation erupts frequently into violence by their younger relatives. Montague Romeo (Leonardo Dicaprio) and Capulet Juliet (Claire Danes) meet at a party, and fall in love at first sight before they realize they should be bitter enemies. You know the rest! Baz Luhrmann’s brash and luminous adaptation of Shakepeare’s play retains the dialogue but moves the action to the contemporary US and replaces the swords with guns. Featuring Harold Perrineau as the greatest Mercutio ever to grace the screen (we will challenge you to a duel on this), 30 years on Romeo + Juliet will still get you as giddy as a first kiss. It’s our 16th birthday and we are feeling shiny so please join us to celebrate with our double feature of Romeo + Juliet (playing outside in Gus’s Garden next to the Natural History Museum, weather permitting) and Baz Luhrmann’s first feature, Strictly Ballroom (indoor screening) on July 30th. "Luhrmann and his two bright angels have shaken up a 400-year-old play without losing its touching, poetic innocence." - Peter Travers, Rolling Stone “It is full of life, extravagantly joyful, then passionately sad, and its lurid 90s crime-chic design doesn't look dated." - Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian _The film overall has aged better than you'd think — which is to say it has hardly aged at all." - Stephanie Zacharek, TIME Nominated: Best Kiss, MTV Movie Awards, 1992 Tickets $12 ($11.40 at the door if available)PUNCH PASSES WELCOME!
