A bastion of Nova Scotian military history, Citadel Hill is all about the vibes this weekend.
We’ve all walked past it a hundred times. You’ve heard the noon gun, maybe dragged a visiting cousin up the hill once, or met the love of your night. But odds are you’ve never stood inside those walls at midnight while a thousand people dance under projections that turn 200-year-old stone into an audiovisual spectacle—a true glow-up.
It’s Vibrancy Festival.
Back for its fifth year this weekend, Friday and Saturday, August 14–15, what began as a night for Halifax’s dance-music heads has quickly become one of the most euphoric and stunning things this city does all year. It’s what organizers call “Halifax’s underground dance music festival,” staged in a national historic site that serves as a museum by day.
The top of the bill runs from people who helped build this music to people rewriting it right now. Victor Calderone closes Friday and LSDXOXO closes Saturday, with Detroit’s DJ Holographic, Chippy Nonstop and DJ Stingray 313 filling the hours in between. Three of the weekend’s biggest names—1-800 GIRLS, Liftkit and Cloverdale—are playing live sets rather than DJ sets.
But here’s the realization: you don’t need to know a single name on the lineup to have one of the best nights of your summer. Curiosity, openness and vibes are all you need.
What are the vibes?
Vibrancy runs August 14–15 at the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site, with the party going from 7 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. each night. Get in before last entry at 11:30 p.m.
The festival is 19+ with no re-entry. There are food vendors, water-refill stations, bathrooms and a beer garden inside. Food, drinks, music and vibes? Say less: tickets are on Eventbrite.
If you’ve been conditioned into the nocturnal notions of nightlife and are wondering why a festival starts at dinnertime, there’s a charming reason: the fort is still forting.
“We can only do it in the evenings, which is crazy, because it all needs to stay open as a museum during the day,” says Cloverdale, aka Alex Walsh, the Halifax producer who performs at Vibrancy and has been a driving force in building the festival. “They don’t let us in until five o’clock, and that’s actually even true on the festival days as well. Which is why we start late.”
You’ll always remember your first time
The two-night event begins the way no club night can—and Cloverdale lights up describing it.
“Even just entering through the drawbridge is a moment on its own, but then we’re able to use the walls as part of our environment,” he says. “We’re able to project on all the walls, and the walls really come alive at night. We have dancers and performers up on the walls, overlooking the crowd. It really comes to life.”
Translation: it’s a vibe—and it’s getting bigger.
New this year, there are two stages and three spaces, including a stage down in the moat. Reached through a tunnel, the moat is reserved for the Halifax collectives, crews and promoters who throw parties the other 363 days a year.
“These folks put on parties and put on events and DJ around town and are sort of pillars in our scene and help make our scene what it is,” says Cloverdale. “Without them, we wouldn’t be able to have a festival like Vibrancy and have a crowd. It’s really sweet to make sure that they’re included.”
Then there’s music at the gate to greet you on the way in—which Cloverdale won’t oversell as a full stage, even though it has its own lineup both nights.
“Even just entering through the drawbridge is a moment on its own.”
Pick your vibe
The night comes and goes faster than 200 BPM hardstyle. We’re partying, not studying the lineup poster. Pick one artist that sounds like your kind of night and let the rest of the weekend happen around you.
DJ Holographic · Friday, 9–10 p.m., The Fort. If disco, R&B or Motown gets you moving, the Detroit artist is your speed. She folds all three into house and techno, so the musical DNA is familiar even if the setting isn’t.
Cloverdale · Friday, 8–9 p.m., The Fort. If you want the most Halifax-coded set of the weekend, this is it. Cloverdale’s Channel 303 is a JUNO-nominated album staged as a fictional television station; in 2026, the live set is largely new material. “I have some synthesizers and some drum machines, and I’m playing and performing and arranging it all live,” Walsh says. “Then I’m also triggering some of the video and lighting cues live as well.”
There are surprises, too, and he isn’t budging: “I’ve told, like, five people, and they’re the only people that need to know. Everything else is a surprise.”
Liftkit · Saturday, 7–8 p.m., The Fort. If you’d rather watch electronic music get built in front of you, the live duo from rural Epekwitk/Prince Edward Island make it on stage with synths, drum machines and sequencers.
Cloverdale’s sample pack
1-800 GIRLS · Friday, 10–11:30 p.m., The Fort. A live set heavy on melody and songwriting. “It’s a little bit more like watching a musician perform rather than while we’re just dancing to a DJ,” Cloverdale says.
DJ Planet Express · Saturday, 8–9 p.m., The Fort. The Toronto DJ’s set is the fun, upbeat, euphoric one—trance-tinged, with housier material threaded through, and early enough to catch before the night gets heavy.
DJ Stingray 313 · Saturday, 10–11:30 p.m., The Fort. The stretch pick: heavy breaks and breakbeats, and probably the least familiar thing on this list. That’s exactly the point. “That’s when it all sort of starts to click,” Cloverdale says, “and you start to understand, ‘Oh, I understand why people love this stuff and why it’s such a release after going out dancing for a night.’”
Your rider: what to wear, what to bring
No one can choose your vibes for you—and Vibrancy isn’t about to invent a dress code.
“Come as you are, dress however you want, dress comfortably, dress crazy,” says Cloverdale. “Some people go all out. Most look like they’re headed out on a summer night downtown. Both are correct.”
What needs particular attention is your feet and your hydration. Wear shoes you can dance in for a few hours. Bring an empty water bottle—there are refill stations on site—and know that food vendors are stationed around back. Bags are welcome and will be screened at the gate.
Then bring the most important thing, which is free.
“Come with an open mind to meet new people and to make some friends and to say hello to your dancing neighbours,” says Cloverdale. “Everyone at dance music events is generally so friendly and so nice and warm and welcoming, and that’s one of the things that makes dance music so special.”
Before you go
It’s rain or shine. Cash and card both work at the vendors. Bring comfortable shoes, an empty water bottle and enough energy to pace yourself.
Pick one artist, arrive curious and stay for the moment. Or take Cloverdale’s last word on it: “Water. Good vibes. Pace yourself.”
